Interact Club of SMK Bandar Sri Damansara 1's International Understanding Day Carnival.

In conjunction with Human Rights Awareness Month, the Interact Club of SMK Bandar Sri Damansara 1 is organizing an International Understanding Day Carnival on the 14th of April 2012 with the collaboration from World Vision to raise funds for the people in West of Africa whose rights to food, education, shelter, safety and more are not fulfilled.
We believe that there is a dire need to help the people, especially the children in West Africa, considering the fact that West Africa is currently the poorest region in the world. Across the Sahel region, 13 million people are facing humanitarian crisis and more than 1 million children are at risk of severe acute malnutrition which can cause death if not treated. This is worsen by the recent drought which causes food scarcity and inflation. In Chad, villagers even dig up ant hills to collect the grains that the ants have stored. Mali, which is 4x the size of Italy, is overpopulated and more than half of the population are facing food-insecurity while the average age of the population in Niger is just 15years old. Those who survive at the age of 15 are at risk of sexual exploitation, human trafficking and domestic servitude. Liberia, the third poorest country in the world has 90% of the population live below 1.25$a day and Sierra Leone is still in a detrimental state even though the blood-diamond fueled civil war which heavily used child soldiers and extreme violence had ended. It currently has the highest infant mortality rate yet the lowest life expectancy in the world. And, these are just some of the crises going on in West Africa.
Living in Malaysia, we are extremely blessed to have all the basic necessities that we tend to forget about those in need and when we do, a majority of us citizens, especially the teenagers feel that we are less capable of helping them for we are neither influential nor affluent. But, we, the interactors of SMK Bandar Sri Damansara 1 believe that when individuals work together, a change can happen, big or small. And, this is why we need your help to make this event a success by joining us on the 14th of April. We understand that the outcome of this event will neither end the civil wars in Africa nor stop the poverty there but at least, it is a humble start for all of us who used to turn our back on these crises.
