A Trip to Remember
Tuesday, 20 March 2012, 10:37
On the 15th of March 2012, a few of us, interactors of SMKBSD1 embarked on a trip. But it wasn’t a trip to somewhere fancy, or well-known, instead it was a Shelter for less fortunate kids in Taman Megah. Upon reaching, we decided to drop by a convenient store to get some stuff for the kids, like stickers, candies and so on. Within half an hour, we were there. We were greeted by the kids and the person in charge with such warm embrace. We also gave them the bag full of clothes donated by Int. Aishah Mellisa.
Then, we splitted into two groups, the first group were assigned to do some ‘gotong-royong’ and the other group was supposed to help the kids with their homework and studies and I was with the second group. The teacher in charge assigned us to different kids respectively, we taught them and assisted them with their studies and most of them were really keen to study.
Approximately two hours later, it was their lunch time. The children swiftly got into a single file before they hurried on to have their meals. We get to know about them more during their lunch time and shared memorable laughters; it was indeed a great bonding moment.
After their meals, we headed back with our teachings and so did the first group with their earlier assigned duties. Besides, the first group did a spectacular job in cleaning up the compound, a big *virtual hug* for them.
Sadly all good things have to come to an end, after saying goodbyes and hugging the kids, it was time to leave as our bus had arrived. Before we left, we also passed the money raised through our Valentines Day Fundraising to Mr. Siva, the person in charge. He thanked our efforts and wished us the best.
But before I end this, here’s a short story I would like to share with everyone: There was this old man who would make his way along the beach for miles every time the tides went out. He would do so to pick up the starfish which had been stranded by the retreating tide and would of course, die of dehydration before the tide returned. But one day his actions was questioned by a young man, he called out and said, “ Hey, what are you doing? Thousands of starfish get washed up every day! Surely, you don’t think that throwing a few back is really going to matter.’ The old man held out the starfish in his hand toward the young man. “ It matters, to this one.’ So even if what we’re doing is at a really small scale, but it does matter. It matters to the kids in need in Taman Megah.
