Valentine's Day Fundraising

In conjunction with‘Heart-to-heart Month’, Interact Club of SMK Bandar Sri Damansara 1 held a fund raising bake sale. As Valentine’s Day falls on the 14th of February every year, we took the advantage to use this date to organise a small fund raising bake sale at school to be donated to the Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-kanak Cacat Taman Megah (PPKKCTM).We decided to sell favourite Valentine’s staple items which were mini red velvet cupcakes, 3 different types of hand-made cards and heart-shaped chocolates. We also had a free-of-charge ‘Secret Cupid Service’, where students could anonymously gift their friends with cards, cupcakes and chocolates. The cupcakes were sold at RM1.50 each and RM3.00 for 3. The hand-made cards cost at RM0.15 each and the chocolates were sold at RM4.00 per packet. Before we proceeded to the nitty-gritty stuffs, we collected RM5 from each Interact Club members so that we could buy the ingredients and materials needed. The money would be given back to the members after we were done with the selling process as we were applying the money investment concept.
Through-out this whole experience, the baking part was the hardest part among all as we weren’t bakers ourselves; just a bunch of teenagers trying to make tasty red velvet cupcakes from scratch within three days. The plan seemed pretty simple - Google recipes, buy ingredients, bake cupcakes and sell. But we underestimated the tiniest details that we had to think, check and recheck so that everything would turn out alright - at least, decent and acceptable.
The next day, the eight of us gathered at one house and started baking straight away since we had to bake around half a thousand loads of mini cupcakes. To smoothen the whole operation, we divided into a group of two for a few different stations. Some of us were making the dry batch, the frosting and the piping. It was a non-stop baking madness. All of these went on till after midnight where only three of us were left. With only about half an hour of sleep, we forced ourselves and mostly our heavy eyelids, to finish up baking and frosting the remaining cupcakes.
On the bake sale day, every class representatives from Interact Club were given 15 mini cupcakes and a bunch of hand-made cards to be sold to their classmates. Along the way, we had some kind of difficulties with the chocolates. Nevertheless, everything were solved later on. Surprisingly, all the items were selling like hot cakes and most unexpectedly, we received such good responses from students about our red velvet cupcakes. It was a success and we managed to raise around RM750, with RM450 profits.
